AI is shifting data engineering from hand-coding pipelines to designing and maintaining AI-augmented data platforms. Tools like dbt co-pilot and AI-powered SQL editors are accelerating development, reducing the need for boilerplate code, but raising the bar for data modeling and quality assurance. The role is becoming less about 'moving data' and more about building reliable, governed data products that feed machine learning models—making data engineers critical enablers of AI, not victims of it. However, entry-level jobs that primarily involve manual ETL scripting are shrinking; mid-senior roles that combine software engineering best practices with deep data architecture knowledge are growing rapidly.
