Generative AI and AutoML tools are automating many traditional modeling steps, such as feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, and even initial model selection, reducing demand for junior data scientists who only focus on applying standard algorithms. However, this shift increases the value of senior roles that combine deep domain knowledge with the ability to architect complex pipelines and validate AI outputs in high-stakes settings (e.g., healthcare or finance). The UK market is seeing a bifurcation: pure 'data scientist' roles are shrinking, while roles titled 'ML Engineer' or 'Applied Scientist' that require strong software engineering and MLOps skills are growing. Consequently, data scientists must upskill in deployment, monitoring, and ethical AI governance to remain competitive.
