AI is rapidly automating routine data preparation and feature engineering, shifting the Data Scientist role toward higher-level model architecture and strategic decision-making. The rise of AutoML and no-code AI platforms means that simpler predictive tasks are increasingly handled by business analysts or software engineers, squeezing the middle of the pyramid. However, AI also creates new demand for specialists who can fine-tune LLMs, build custom RAG systems, and validate models for fairness and reliability. In Canada, the push for sovereign AI infrastructure (e.g., compute clusters, national AI strategy) is creating opportunities for data scientists with strong engineering and MLOps skills. The role is bifurcating: either you become a deep technical expert or you move closer to the business as an AI strategist.
