AI is automating routine data analysis tasks such as basic reporting, SQL query generation, and initial pattern identification, shifting the Data Analyst role toward more strategic interpretation and validation of AI outputs. Tools like AutoML and natural-language interfaces (e.g., Microsoft Copilot for Power BI) allow stakeholders to self-serve basic insights, reducing demand for entry-level reporting analysts. However, AI still struggles with context-specific business logic, data quality assessment, and narrative-driven storytelling, making analysts who combine technical rigor with business judgment more valuable. The role is evolving from 'query writer' to 'data steward' — responsible for ensuring data integrity, question definition, and ethical use of models. Canadian employers increasingly require analysts to build simple predictive models or work alongside data scientists, so Python and ML fundamentals are becoming baseline expectations.
