Pre-built APIs and AutoML now handle baseline modeling, compressing the time spent on model training and increasing the value of robust deployment, monitoring, and data pipeline skills. Generative AI has created new demand for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and LLM fine-tuning, but also raises expectations for production reliability. The core role remains solid, but practitioners who cannot operationalize models or leverage cloud-native tooling face increasing competition from AI-augmented development platforms.
