Machine Learning Engineer

Machine Learning Engineers are both driving and being reshaped by generative AI. Much of the low-level work—model selection, hyperparameter tuning, and even data preprocessing—is being automated by AI-driven tools like AutoML and large language model APIs. As a result, the role is shifting from hand-crafting models to designing complex data pipelines, managing infrastructure, and integrating pre-trained models into products. Engineers who adapt by focusing on MLOps, system design, and domain-specific fine-tuning will remain indispensable, while those who only do manual model building may see demand compress. Overall, AI is elevating the required skill bar, not eliminating the career.
